FIONA

Fiona is a sweet Cocker Spaniel who has had a rough life in her 6 short years. Abandoned in a grassy field by an uncaring owner, she was brought to the shelter in deplorable condition with her coat completely matted and her body covered in ticks. Not only was Fiona confused and frightened, but she was also blind. The shelter staff grew fond of Fiona and networked her to the rescue community which is when our rescue stepped in. Fiona was immediately taken to an ophthalmologist and diagnosed with uveitis, an eye condition that has no definitive cause, but most likely caused by trauma. The vet also discovered an old fracture in her pelvis which may have been the result of being kicked.
Fiona has been living in a foster home where she has adjusted nicely and navigates rooms by relying on her sense of smell. Her foster mom recently noticed some lameness and pain in her back legs and difficulty walking for long distances. Upon examination by an orthopedic veterinarian, Fiona was diagnosed with Grade 3 Luxation-Patellar in both knees, which means that her right-leg kneecap slips in and out of the joint while her left knee it is completely out. The bad news is that both legs will require expensive surgery to correct but the good news is that it can be corrected and the surgery will relieve her pain. In the meantime, we have her on pain and joint medication.
Any donation you can make toward Fiona's surgery is much needed and so appreciated by all of us at New Beginnings for Animals. We hope to raise enough money through December to schedule her surgery before the new year. Thank you!
