Our Rescue Efforts
Since 2000, New Beginnings for Animals has rescued and adopted out over 4,000 dogs and cats from shelters throughout the counties of Orange, San Diego, San Bernardino, Los Angeles, Riverside and Merced.
Our rescue and transport efforts account for over 32% of all the animals saved from euthanasia at the Merced County shelter.
| • |
One of California's top five poorest regions (225 sq. miles; rural, agricultural) |
| • |
21.7% unemployment rate (highest in the U.S.) |
| • |
25.2% of the population lives below poverty level |
| • |
Approximately 750 animals impounded at the county shelter monthly |
| • |
Over 70% of those animals are euthanized each year |
In 2004, we began Operation MAX (Merced Animal Xpress) to fund and manage the release and transport of animals out of the Merced County shelter to the Oregon Humane Society and other rescue organizations throughout the Pacific Northwest where they are made available for adoption. These areas don't experience the problem of pet overpopulation and there's a high demand for adoptable pets.
In addition to the animals we've rescued from the Merced County shelter, in 2008/2009, we prevented over 600 animals from ever reaching that shelter due to our intervention prior to impound.
Why Merced County Shelter?

About Us
Each animal is examined by a licensed veterinarian, vaccinated, spayed/neutered, bathed/groomed, flea treated and AVID microchipped. They are either fostered by families or boarded with veterinarians, depending on foster-home availability, until they can be adopted into permanent, loving homes. All new homes are screened and home checked, and we're committed to the welfare of our rescues for the rest of their lives. If for any reason an adoption doesn't work out, we require that the animal be returned to us.
We evaluate each animal's temperament and work with professional trainers to correct any behavioral issues. New Beginnings for Animals doesn't discriminate against any animal based on breed, size or age--all dogs and cats are created equal in our eyes!
